When it comes to comic book movies, Venom is, without any shadow of a doubt, one of the most contentious characters in recent history.

The character has been portrayed by both American actor Topher Grace (in 2007's Spider-Man 3) and British star Tom Hardy (in this year's Venom) on the big screen - and both portrayals have received at least as much criticism as they have praise (probably more, in fact).

In this video, we'll be taking a look at both live action versions of the character and deciding which one is the best.

We'll be looking at factors like the initial reactions to the respective castings, how the actors performed as Eddie Brock, how the actors performed as Venom, the quality of the movies in which they appeared, the level of power their characters displayed, the power/worthiness of their respective opponents (Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man in the case of Topher Grace and Riz Ahmed's Riot in the case of Tom Hardy), and the critical and fan reception to the final product.

When Venom was announced and went into production, many fans were anticipating a lot more than just a stand alone movie. Because of Sony’s connection with Spider-Man in the MCU, many were expecting the same treatment for Venom, but this was not the case. Venom stands on his own, without the Tom Holland version of Spider-Man and many fans were disappointed not to see the two characters collide.

But was there a whole different kind of connection in Sony’s Venom?! Was the company so fed up with the MCU that they branched out into another cinematic universe?! Of course, we’re talking about Superman here -- but does Henry Cavill really appear in Venom?! Well, it’s a little more complicated than that, but not completely out of the realm of possibility. We’ve seen crossovers like this in the past and taking steps to do it in the movies can go a long way. Venom’s character reveals some secrets about its weaknesses and the character uses his super buddy as a way to describe them. Even if you’ve seen the movie, you may have missed the brief moment. Of course, Spider-Man does also make an appearance in the film, but in a much different way. By watching the post-credits scene, you can see an exclusive clip of Miles Morales and Peter Parker in the newest Spider-Man animated film. The clip acts as a post-credits scene in a whole different universe than the Venom movie -- so does Venom have more of a chance of appearing in the DCEU than the MCU?! Sony's Venom movie is in theatres right now and Tom Hardy's version of the character is showing off his super-strength, speed, agility and durability.

But did you know Venom has displayed a much larger array of superpowers in Marvel's Comic books and in other media?

In this video, we'll run you through just some of the lesser known superpowers you didn't know Venom had.

The superpowers in question are; his shapeshifting ability (which includes camouflage, the ability to look like any human, transforming into a car, creating a giant mouth on his torso, and transforming into a humanoid form even without a host), his immunity to certain powers (such as Spider-Man's Spider-sense and Ghost Rider's Penance Stare), his ability to secrete acid through his skin, his bizarre ability to emulate water (which allows him to breathe under it), his ability to suppress any cancers in his human hosts, his ability to hear "the voice of the cosmos" (which, for example, allows him to respond to distress signals in space), his ability to access the internet (quite literally - we don't just mean he can log on via his laptop), his super-teeth that enable him to bite through almost anything and are venomous, his ability to shoot off certain parts of his body, and his ability to clone the powers of other superpowered characters.
