
As the television series 《Nothing Gold Can Stay》 becomes famous, the ZengGao (glutinous rice and dates cake), which is well-loved by the female protagonist Zhou Ying, gains popularity as well. ZengGao is a local delicacy in the GuanZhong area, and it is served only among the royalties in the past. Since 1979, Ma Wen Zhang has been helping his father in selling ZengGao. As his father got older, he followed his father's footstep and took over the business. He opens his business at 6am every morning, and over 600 portions of ZengGao will be sold out before 8am. Even the regular customers have to get there early if they want to have a taste of the ZengGao. Wen Zhang is a typical XI'an person, humble and kindhearted. Often there are people asking for directions interrupts Wen Zhang when he is doing his business, but Wen Zhang is always passionate to help them. He ended up putting the slogan "Helping others is a virtue in Chinese culture" on his signboard. The process of making ZengGao is not very complicated, but time consuming. Wen Zhang has to prepared the ingredients a day in advance. The glutinous rice has to be soaked for about 5 hours, while the kidney bean has to be soaked for more than 10 hours. The red dates has to be pre-soaked as well. These three ingredients are layered on top of each other, and it is heated over high heat until it boils, then the flame is turned down allowing the food to be cooked over low heat. After 5 hours, the smell of the glutinous rice, the beans and the dates are mixed together, and powdered sugar is sprinkled on top. The diners said that the smell of Wen Zhang's ZengGao can be detected from a far distance, and it is the favorite taste of Xi'an people. This ZengGao is not just a normal food, but a shared memory among the Xi'an people.
