The terrifying role of Pennywise the Dancing Clown has been made iconic in the world of horror by two actors in the form of Tim Curry and Bill Skarsgård - who played the sadistic and incredibly powerful character in the 1990 miniseries and the 2017 movie respectively.

Stephen King's horrifying creation is right up there in terms of horror notoriety with villains likes Nightmare on Elm Street's Freddy Krueger, Halloween's Michael Myers and Friday the 13th's Jason Voorhees - but things could've been very different had other characters played the terrifying monster.

In this video, we'll be taking a look at five actors who almost played Pennywise.

The actors in question are; Will Poulter (star of We're the Millers, The Maze Runner and The Revenant), Kirk Acevedo (star of Oz, Fringe and Band of Brothers), Malcolm McDowell (star of A Clockwork Orange, Caligula and If....), Roddy McDowall (star of Cleopatra, The Poseidon Adventure and Fright Night) and Tilda Swinton (star of Edward II, Michael Clayton and Doctor Strange) in what would have been a gender swap role (and not her first, after her portrayal of the classically male Ancient One in the aforementioned Doctor Strange movie).
